Umcebo Design

The wonderful thing about the South African design community is the strong sense of social awareness that runs through it. Umcebo Design is one such studio that gives a marginalised segment of society a chance at artistic expression while fostering their self-sufficiency.

Creative director Robin Opperman serves as the middle man, tracking down the most talented artists from disadvantaged and refugee communities to create show-stopping, intricate pendant bead and wirework lighting products.

Each lovingly handmade artwork contains animal and floral references, and serves as a gorgeous glimpse into the imaginations of artists who might not otherwise have had a chance at greater exposure.
