Interior Design Trends for the Year of the Monkey!
Every new-year brings with it new ideas, new movements, new creations and new trends, and this year isn’t any different. Here we chat to Marcia Margolius from SA Décor about her forecast for the hottest trends this year and how we can bring them into our homes. Get ready to be inspired…
Rose Quartz and Serenity
Out with Marsala, and in with Pantone’s 2016 colour of the Year: Rose Quartz and Serenity. Not only do these two shades blend together better than the strawberries and bananas in your breakfast smoothie, they also evoke welcome feelings of romance and nostalgia. We love this everyday mohair throw from Hinterveld. Marcia suggests bringing it into the bedroom or lounge to add a gentle dose of colour.
Marble is back – and with a bang too! No, we aren’t talking about old-fashioned marble sculptures or floor-to-ceiling marble bathrooms in ghastly hues; we’re talking about sleek, modern marble. “I love the organic, endless feel of marble. It just goes on and on and on, and doesn’t have a set pattern,” says Marcia. “I love it in a kitchen but due to its porous nature I would suggest bringing it into the bathroom.”
Inspired by true Mediterranean style, chic decorative tiles with Spanish flair are must-haves this year. Marcia advises using them on bathroom floors, as a kitchen splashback or even in the bathroom sink to make a strong statement and to encourage an individualistic and stylistic feel. If you’re planning on sprucing up your home with this trend, we recommend the pretty and patterned Pavimento range from Italtile.
“Everyone seems to be going back to wood. I would suggest panelling a whole wall and then accessorising with steel and glass items,” says Marcia. The broad range of European oak floors and walls by OGGIE create a wonderful effect on the floor, wall or even ceiling of any bedroom, lounge or office space. We love the herringbone effect for its modern take on the old parquet floor pattern. We also love the fact that OGGIE is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved, which means the wood comes from sustainable oak forests (trendy and good for the environment, now that’s what we’re talking about).
“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” This time, the answer’s not the Evil Queen or even Snow White, but the mirror itself. “This year you can expect to see the statement mirror making a comeback,” says Marcia. She reckons we’ll be seeing a lot of vintage inspired mirrors, much like these beauties from SHF. We also think you might get lucky with something decadent at your local antique store.
