Snap, crackle and POP Champagne Bar!
Champagne inspired black and gold décor at Greenside’s new go-to-venue!
Newly launched Joburg Champagne and MCC bar, POP, bedazzles both the eyes and the tongue. We take a look at their décor style and taste their liquid currency.
Anyone who loves gold as much as I do (more is always better), is guaranteed to make this bountiful little spot on Joburg’s Greenside strip a regular hangout. If you have any doubts as to where POP’s décor and colour inspiration comes from, they’re sure to fizzle out once you get your first glass of this bar’s specialty – Champagne and MCC.
Bubbly for everyone!
Owners Zak Jansen and Danie Herbst have an enormous love for bubbly and have shared many happy memories over a glass (or, we suspect, two). But, there wasn’t really a place in Joburg exclusively dedicated to the enjoyment of this golden beverage – not one most people could afford anyway. So, less than a year ago they decided to open their own place where imported Champagne and local MCCs would be accessible to people like them – young professionals living and working in the surroundings areas.
Here, you can get your fill of bubbles by the glass and they start from as little as R37. Of course you can’t just try the entire menu, as one would be tempted to do, without snacking on a little something (even if you are Ubering home) and to this end you can choose from a number of beautifully crafted meals. Each dish, prepared by Chef Danie van Niekerk with a sense of creative culinary adventure, is focussed on complementing your Champagne experience. And if you’re in luck, as we were, Zak himself will give you a little description of the drink in your hand.
Not all that glitters is Champagne
None of this sparkle and glamour should come as a surprise though, as both the owners come from a high-end hospitality background. Herbst, also an interior and jewellery designer, took great care in sourcing and designing every item in the bar to create the green, black and gold visual sensation which is POP.
Gold mirrors and bejeweled animal heads adorn the walls. Gold upholstered, diamond stitch and deep button chairs accompany slick modern table surfaces; and gold trims the staircase and garden swings…
Yes, I said garden swings
In order to break the formality of the heavy Victorian decor inside, the open-air entrance has playful green turf and romantic black and gold garden swings where you can enjoy your bubbly on the move.
The duo designed the restaurant and bar around the space, instead of forcing the space into the design. A narrow floor area, but dramatic staircase and double volume ceiling should have proved tricky but in fact they integrate seamlessly, as if they were part of the design all along! By saving space on a smaller than usual bar and reception desk, they were able to place the tables all along the passage – creating intimacy for each group.
POP is open from Tuesdays to Fridays for brunch, lunch and dinner; and on Saturdays and Sundays they’re open early enough for a Champagne breakfast. Because, in Herbst’s words, Champagne shouldn’t be out of anyone’s reach.
