Reading Nooks to Inspire

“Unfortunately, we must start the story with an empty chair.”
Nanny McPhee

There is something about the rain pattering on the roof, a warm fire roaring and cups of hot beverages that just gets the imagination going. Before long, you feel the tingling in your hand to reach out and grab a great novel.

Once you have your book in hand, the next question is where to make yourself comfortable for the next few hours. Your head is yearning for escape, now your body wants to go to!

If you are an avid reader, as we are at BigCityLife, then perhaps it’s time to create that cozy book nook that you’ve wanted ever since you were a kid. Here we explore four different nooks that you can create in your home.

All you need is a chair and a corner

Most people find that the best thing to do is to grab their favorite chair and go from there. You will need to find a corner of the house to put your chair, along with a snuggly blanket, a few well-coordinated scatter cushion and of course, a few of your treasured tomes. The effect is a simple one of comfort and modesty. This is one of the easiest ways to make your own special nook.

Window Seat Nook

If you have a large window in your home, then this may be the perfect solution for you. With just a bit of wood to create a bench and some large, gorgeous cushions, you could create a whole new space for you and your family to enjoy. Just imagine, sitting there, nestled amongst the cushions, turning the page and as you pause between chapters you can look outside at the rain gently landing against the window. Magical.

Unused Space Nook

There are those of us who live in homes that have an odd space somewhere. You know the one that makes you ask what the architect could possibly have been thinking?

Next time you see that slightly too-large landing by the stairs, or the odd space underneath the stairs, take up the challenge to convert it with some cozy cushions, colourful, Wonka-esque bean bags, mini chairs (a-la Alice in Wonderland) or even a few shelves.

Don’t forget, there is always the floor!

If buying a vintage armchair is a bit out your budget, you can always go Persian style with a few floor cushions, blankets and a stack of books. This is the easiest way to create your dream reading haven and it takes the least amount of effort.  You can even add a layer of whimsy to this with a large mosquito net, or a whimsical tent, to hang over your reading space. Or perhaps a few pinstriped pennant banners from wall to wall.

Feel free to play

Keeping to your own individual tastes and styles when creating your special book space goes without saying, but bear in mind that this is an area to be comfy in. It’s also an area where a little fun and whimsy is allowed. It’s all about imagination and relaxation.

You can even pick your favorite book and find the theme to your book nook within the pages. If you loved Paddington Bear as a child, you can add a few old vintage suitcases and umbrellas in the corner. If your reading style has gotten a bit raunchy over the years, you could always subtly decorate in, say, fifty shades of gray and see if anyone else noticed what you did there.
