My Top 10 finds for The Beach Cottage

I love BigCityLife. I have always loved BigCityLife, I am the #sassygirl with urban Chanel boots, or converse sneakers and skinny ripped jeans, with button-down cotton shirts, and pink double-tied Burberry scarf.

I was born in the city, I grew up in the city. My youth was in the city. I am obsessed with design and architecture and anything that sings URBAN. My photography takes me to the most amazing cities in the world, and you will find me, cappuccino (or gin) in hand, settled in a little artisan café under the bright city lights of whatever country I am in, working on photos from the day’s takings.

So when the opportunity came my way to buy a little Beach Cottage in my favourite part of the world, at the end of a very long beach, I jumped at the chance. While it was mad and crazy and ridiculous, I looked at it as a long-term project.  A fixer-upper design project. Building and designing my dream home. A haven from the madness – and a place I could go and recharge my busy soul.

I want my beach cottage clean, modern, with a vintage scandi twist. I want beautiful, comfortable couches that you can sleep on, furniture that will last a lifetime. I want quality, NYC loft-inspired style… I want a space that has charm and is eclectic and is not the “average South African home”.

Mostly I want my space to speak to me – to be a place of wonder filled with treasures from my travels all around the world. My home must be the quite to my frantic mind. It must feel like… “home” the moment I walk in the door after a long trip.

So not at all a challenging brief then!

I am at an exciting crossroads in my design makeover. I am still doing a few building projects on the ground floor. I am also enjoying a little shopping on the second floor and taking into account, that I sold all my furniture in JHB after the Rose Cottage was rented out, I get to start with a clean slate!

I found myself with a free afternoon in Jozi, and an urge to do a look-see for the Upside Down Beach Cottage. I took a little wander over to my favourite guilty pleasure. My favourite store, Weylandts in Fourways.

So I went shopping, so much shopping! My Goodness! Couches, lights, accessories, beds, carpets, soft furnishings, more lights… did I mention lights? My obsession – in case you missed it – is lights!

I have to share my favourite finds with you, because I am just SO excited about them. I love them all!!!

First up…

The classic “must have” Cloud Modular Sofa White Sofa (From R104,975.00). Every house needs a beautiful white couch, “It’s not practical”, you cry. “It will be stressful” you mutter. “The DOGS!” you shriek. But I’ve got you! I have a long haired dog who beach sand sticks to like Velcro, until he gets to the house whereupon it all magically falls to the ground! BUT, all I do with my white couches is spray a protective coat on them and there you go! Any dirt just wipes off!

Now let’s chat about African sunshine filled parties.

Ok more like gatherings in my cottage! I do love a “good gather”, especially if it comes with a  glass of fabulous pink Feinbos G&T. I have found a set of these gorgeous Earthenware Plates, which complements the red in the scarlet berries from my G&Ts perfectly. I have mixed the grey and blue set. These plates are perfect for my soon to be infamous “tapas on the terrace” gatherings and they are gorgeous. The quality is just outstanding.

Earthenware Range:
Earth Dinner Plate – R156
Earth Oval Serving Platter – R556
Earth Pasta Bowl – R140
Earth Serving Platter – R396

A selection of eclectic Conic & Cylinder vases is a must. I have to have them on my feinbos table setting to offset my feinbos G&Ts. You can’t have one without the other. My garden is brimming with these beautiful plants and also has giant pin cushions proteas which should start blooming any day now.

Conic Vase Range:
Small -R395
Large -R595

Cylinder Vase Range:
R225.00 – R1,695.00
Available in the colours Smoke, Cognac, Olive Grey

I spent about an hour in the store just swinging this gorgeous light around, and around. This could be a potential work distraction on deadline. It is so beautiful and you can move it to change the way the light falls.

Then I found these globes, I need all of them. Yep – you heard me right. Edison bulbs are a must for any home.  Use them for a gorgeous light chain – and mix up the different sizes. Perfect to bring a golden sparkle to your living space (From R200).

Wine – a girl cannot live on craft G&Ts alone. She also needs wine. And of course, the wine requires suitably stylish storage. Charlie, the local Kommetjie purveyor of said grape infusion has a way of wielding his charm, resulting in an astounding volume of the stuff.

Well, I have found a PERFECT storage place for it! It hangs on the wall! The wall mounted Wine Rack is avialable in 6 bottles – R925, 12 bottles – R1295 or my personal preferece 15 bottles – R1595.

I am torn between the Pallet Bed and the Delta Bed. I love the Pallet bed, while I also love the soft comfy upholstered Delta Bed. What do you think? I am battling to decide. I see endless sleepless nights trying to decide which will be perfect – as they are both perfect. Decisions, decisions.

Delta Bed
R15,996.00 – R24,995.00

Pallet Bed
R8,595.00 – R11,995.00

Available in standard and extra length. Price excludes mattress. Mattresses are available for purchase from Weylandts – enquire in store.

I need a desk. I love the Tuareg Writing Desk – R10,995.00. Its cool and contemporary and reminds me of NYC.

Floor cushions with a gorgeous tassle detail – R1,795.00. For the deck! Or for lounging in winter by the fireplace. Love these! You can never have too many cushions.

Finally, every beach cottage needs a hammock.. This one is perfect! I can spend my long lazy Sundays, drinking tea and reading old paperbacks scavenged from the local bookstores.

This is my beach cottage life!

Happy house decor hunting, and don’t forget to pop into Weylandts for fantastic service, luxury beyond reproach and the best furniture to suit your home and living space gathered from far and wide around the globe.

A few bookmarks for my future plans.

I love this sectional couch – it is so cool. Love! You can even change the design – and it is perfect for afternoon naps!

Lastly, this is such an awesome couch! Sadly it does not fit my space – but it’s so beautiful! Gorgeous light as well.

Did I mention I also like the in-store coffee shops?
